With the recent fuel price increase, drivers need to be more aware of the fact that as much as a vehicle’s engine and fuel system needs to be in optimal operating condition, driving habits and driving styles play an equally important role in a vehicle’s overall fuel consumption.
Here are a few tips to getting a better fuel consumption with a few adjustments to your driving style
- Avoid harsh acceleration and braking. Accelerate slowly and smoothly and get into high gear as quickly as possible. Instead of harsh braking, to bring the vehicle to a complete stop, rather anticipate traffic flow and decelerate to slow down.
- Maintain a steady speed. Small variations in speed (touching brakes and accelerator) can increase fuel consumption by as much as 20%. As far as possible, allow your vehicle to naturally slow down or speed up, for example when driving on a downhill.
- Ensure tyres are properly inflated to manufacturer suggested pressures, to avoid rolling resistance.
- Use the cruise control.
- Ensure you are using the correct octane fuel for your vehicle; this information should be in your Owner’s Manual.
